context

Context is Liam Goodacre’s modular sequencer for Pd, in which individual step-sequencer/selector units can be interconnected into specialized sequencing networks. It is implemented primarily as Pd abstractions and bundles or relies on several external libraries.

Objects

  • autocreate autocreate is described as a simple object for dynamic use, but the supplied help-patch text is incomplete and does not establish exactly what it creates or changes.
  • bank bank is an overlay object that creates a memory bank of different context states.
  • canvas_name canvas_name outputs a canvas ID as a symbol when banged.
  • canvasargs canvasargs manipulates an abstraction’s saved arguments and name in its parent patch.
  • canvasconnections canvasconnections queries the connections of its containing canvas and can report the canvas’s number of inlets and outlets.
  • canvasdelete canvasdelete deletes itself when it receives a bang, allowing dynamically patched objects to remove themselves by index.
  • canvasdollarzero canvasdollarzero reports the $0 value of a canvas when banged and is intended to query canvas-specific identifiers.
  • canvaserror canvaserror prints a real error message to the Pd console.
  • canvasindex canvasindex dynamically reports the index of an abstraction or subpatch within its parent canvas, while its second outlet reports how many objects that canvas contains.
  • canvasname canvasname queries and modifies a canvas name, including the pd name of subpatches.
  • canvasobjectposition canvasobjectposition gets or sets the position of an arbitrary object in a specified canvas, allowing objects to be moved without mouse interaction.
  • canvasposition canvasposition retrieves or sets the position of an object or its containing patch, and can also query the containing canvas’s size.
  • canvasselect canvasselect selects or deselects objects in a Pd canvas, with bare select and deselect messages operating on all objects.
  • classtest classtest checks whether Pd knows a specified object class, outputting 1 when the class exists and 0 otherwise.
  • closebang closebang emits a bang when an abstraction is deleted, allowing it to perform tasks such as cleaning up resources, tracking instances, or saying goodbye.
  • connect connect is a time-saving dynamic-patching tool for making or breaking many Pd connections and for shifting existing connections between an object’s inlets or outlets.
  • content content stores arrays and plays them back as an embedded component of context.
  • context context is described by its help patch as “an advanced sequencer for Pd” (version 4.0).
  • contour contour is an advanced interface for drawing precise functions into arrays by moving, creating, or deleting points on a canvas.
  • control control is an interface between Context and Novation hardware that links with all context objects in a Pd patch.
  • coord coord is a special slider that grips a selected point and controls either its x or y coordinate, supporting automation of the value.
  • coord-index The help patch does not document the behavior or purpose of coord-index; it only uses else/openfile to open coord-help.pd.
  • crossreference crossreference is an overlay abstraction used to connect Context instances, with each Context containing its own crossreference object.
  • ctx ctx is an embeddable object that creates audio inlets.
  • entry entry provides an editable text-entry area for entering and displaying text, with messages to set, append, or clear its contents.
  • finder finder translates Context events into a linear timeline so a running Context network’s pattern can be observed.
  • fromany fromany converts any Pd message into a list of numeric character codes.
  • getdir getdir outputs the filesystem directory in which the current patch is operating as a symbol when it receives a bang.
  • initbang initbang emits a bang immediately after its containing abstraction is loaded, making it useful for abstraction initialization.
  • keylist keylist is an Overlay abstraction that binds Context commands to keyboard input.
  • list-drip list-drip drips or serializes an input list, sending its elements individually from the first outlet.
  • list-extend list-extend builds and stores a list from incoming elements or lists, outputting the stored list as items are added.
  • list-filter list-filter returns a list containing only the input items for which a connected operation produces a true value; any value other than 0 is considered true.
  • list-len list-len calculates the length of a list and outputs the result as a float.
  • list-map list-map applies a user-defined operation element by element to an incoming list and outputs the resulting list.
  • list-pad list-pad completes an input list by padding it with additional values.
  • list-replace list-replace replaces part of a list starting at a specified position, using another list as the replacement.
  • list-splat list-splat is an advanced form of list split that divides an incoming list while moving the right part of the list to the left.
  • marker marker directs the playback of embedded context content.
  • mover mover is used to move samples around the context canvas and can also resize them from the right side.
  • mtx_check mtx_check checks whether a Pd matrix message is valid and can fix an underspecified matrix by padding missing elements with zeros.
  • num num is a number box intended for use in state-saving abstractions.
  • oreceive oreceive is an ordered receive object that behaves similarly to the common receive object.
  • patch The help patch identifies patch as a tiny abstraction, but its explanation of what the object does is incomplete.
  • pgrid pgrid links control with abstractions.
  • preset preset is a tool for creating templates for context.
  • propertybang propertybang enables the “property” menu for an abstraction and sends a bang when that property action occurs.
  • psave psave provides the core auto-saving mechanism for state-saving abstractions and can save parameters for objects such as contour.
  • receivecanvas receivecanvas receives all messages sent to a canvas, allowing those messages to be observed or processed.
  • savebangs savebangs sends a bang whenever its containing patch is saved, allowing save-related actions to be triggered; it also works inside abstractions when the parent is saved.
  • scaler scaler converts numbers into musical notes expressed as frequencies.
  • sendcanvas sendcanvas sends messages to a canvas, allowing canvas operations such as creating objects.
  • slide slide is a slider intended for use in state-saving abstractions, identified by a shared group name and a unique letter assignment.
  • slide2 slide2 is the same as slide but provides two outlets, serving as a named slider with a configurable output range.
  • sys_gui sys_gui sends raw Tcl commands directly to Pd’s GUI process, allowing GUI settings and actions to be controlled.
  • toany toany converts a list of numeric character codes into Pd messages, such as lists, floats, or anything messages.
  • tog tog is a simple toggle intended for use in state-saving abstractions.
  • undo undo is embedded in context to track changes made to its settings, allowing saved undo states to be revisited.
